1. What was the climax of the story? Some of you have already talked about this in class, but I want each group to come to a consensus.

3. Why did you like/dislike the novel? Don't just say "I thought the story was good"... I want some opinion and thought, here! Also, I don't want you to write "it sucked" without backing up your opinion with some good, critical comments. Think of a movie review. Those reviewers never just say "it sucked"... they give evidence and details.And... it's okay to dislike your book!

1.The climax of the story may be when John throws out the Soma out of the hospital window. That resulted in a violent riot with the Deltas because the people living there were too dependent on the drug. Since they were infants, they were programed to think that the drugs were essential to them. After this incident, Bernald and Helmholtz to leave the World State and join others that does not quite fit into the World State.

2. I again think that this social commentary is mainly about propaganda. Propaganda is normally one sided information that can stimulate nationalism or gain support. Like soma, it is used to keep the people happy. Propaganda can be used for political reasons or religious reasons. If most of the people are supporting a cause, it discourages idividualism.

3. Brave New World was an interesting book since it portrayed our present society as an extreme. This comparison helps the reader understand why/how some people like John may feel out of place with the World State.

A leap towards Eutopia

Although an extremist's ideas may sound insane, there is always at least a glorious reason behind those ideas that is responsible for the support from the people. Despite if your a fascists, nationalist, communist, or a socialist, the bottom line is that you want to improve your government.

In the book BRAVE NEW WORLD, the government tries to keep everyone happy through limiting or altering their thinking. That is pretty much what every government hopes to achieve through propaganda. Propaganda could provide stability since everyone would be fighting for the same cause. Huxley demonstrates the effectiveness of altered and manipulated thinking, but he also slips in some of the more essential elements to human life other than blinded happiness. Individuals are expected to think at a higher level rather than just abiding to stability.

Aldous Huxley

Born in England on July 26,1894, Aldous Huxley was from a family of scientists. At age 14, Huxley lost his mother (Julia Arnold). Then at age 17, he partially lost his vision due to an illness. His blindness prevented him from becoming a doctor as well as a soldier during WWI. Once his eye sight recovered, he went to Oxford where he took his degree in English Literature.

He began his writing career as a journalist, and during that time period, he began writing poems,essays,and historical pieces. In 1916, he published his 1st collection of poems, The Burning Wheel. Most of Huxley's early works were writtin in Italy and southern France. Then in 1937, Huxley came to the United States. His later books were then written in New Mexico and California. Lastly, on November 22,1963, Huxley died in California.

Huxley's Brave New World is a sci-fi book. His background in science allows him to give his book a scientific twist to it. This books shows the extremes of technology, especially biotechnology. The downside of technology may be one of the themes of this story.
